Fees & Policies

CHOIR INSTRUCTION

TEMC choristers may enroll for either Choir Only or Choir and Music Instruction with Tutor. Tutoring with a professional musician can be in voice, piano, guitar or strings. Every effort is made to comply with the student’s choice in tutor time and choice of instrument.

Thanks to the generosity of the David Ouchterlony Choir School Endowment Fund as well as our great volunteer effort to keep costs low, choir fees are very reasonable. Tutors are music professionals with experience in teaching. The caliber of instruction is very high and families are given the opportunity to take full advantage of this by ensuring students are prepared and practice for lessons.

CHOIR TUTORING & ATTENDANCE

CHOIR ATTENDANCE

Commitment to attending all rehearsals and performances and being on time is required by the TEMC Choir School to ensure successful performances that everyone can be proud of. The choir is a team. The selection of repertoire sung at worship or concerts is predicated on regular attendance.

Any chorister that auditions and is assigned a specific principle role in a performance must attend all rehearsals, otherwise the role will be assigned to an alternative. More than 24 hours advance notice is required in cases of sickness or family emergency.

Please notify Elaine Choi, Music Director if absence is necessary due to illness or an emergency before 3:00 PM on Wednesdays, and by 8:15 AM on Sundays. Only sickness and family emergencies are considered acceptable reasons for absences. Unfortunately, students who miss more than 25% of choir calls will not receive their End of Year Certificate of Participation.

TUTORING ATTENDANCE

Weekly Tutoring Sessions

Tutors will contact the families to arrange for private tutoring times with their students and are scheduled on a date agreed upon by both parties and are held either at the church or at a mutually convenient location.  Any family that has not heard from their tutors by October 1st, need to contact Ms. Elaine Choi.

  • Who: Tutor to contact student family
  • When: Dates to be established prior to October 1st
  • Where: By a mutually agreed to place; the church is available

Lateness: Our schedule is very tight, so if a student arrives late for a lesson, the lesson time will not be extended and will end at the designated time, resulting in less learning time. If a student is more than 15 minutes late, the lesson will be considered missed, and a missed lesson fee will be requested.

Missed Sessions: The church subsidizes tutorials in order to develop choristers’ musicianship and as such the Choir School cannot justify subsidizing missed sessions. The family is therefore responsible to keep tutors informed of all schedule changes including absences as the student or family member must contact the tutor directly at least 24 hours prior to the lesson to make arrangements for a make-up lesson. Up to three make-up lessons will be accommodated in the year when 24 hour (or more) notice is provided.

Unfortunately, if a session is missed without sufficient notice, it cannot be rescheduled and parents will be expected to pay a $20.00 fee to the Choir School to cover the cost of the tutoring session. The tutor will report their student’s attendance to the program coordinator, who will track any money owing to the school. Tutors are similarly required to inform families of cancellations 24 hours in advance. Sessions cancelled by tutors will be rescheduled at a mutually convenient time at no extra charge to the family.
